Technical FAQ
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY BRAKE DISCS CAN BE SKIMMED?
Before skimming, we inspect the brake discs and measure their thickness. This allows us to determine whether there is enough material remaining for the discs to be safely skimmed and returned to service.
If the discs are too worn or unsuitable for skimming, we will advise you that replacement is the better option.
HOW MUCH MATERIAL IS REMOVED?
We remove only what is needed to restore a smooth, even braking surface.
The discs are measured before skimming and checked again afterwards to make sure they remain within the required limits.
IS BRAKE DISC SKIMMING SAFE?
Yes, provided the brake discs are still suitable for skimming.
This is why Skimming Solutions checks and measures the discs before starting. Discs that are too worn or otherwise unsuitable will not be skimmed.
HOW LONG DOES BRAKE DISC SKIMMING TAKE?
The skimming process typically takes around 45–60 minutes per axle.
The total time can vary depending on the condition of the brake discs and whether the vehicle has already been prepared for skimming. If Skimming Solutions needs to prepare the vehicle first, additional time will be required.
CAN YOU SKIM BRAKE DISCS ON OR OFF THE VEHICLE?
Skimming Solutions can skim brake discs either on the vehicle or off the vehicle.
The method used will depend on the vehicle, how it has been prepared and what is most suitable for the job.
DO I NEED TO REPLACE MY BRAKE PADS AFTER SKIMMING?
Not necessarily but it is advised. We inspect the brake pads along with the discs and calipers and will advise if replacement is absolutely needed.
If new pads are required, you can supply them yourself or Skimming Solutions can arrange replacement pads for you.
